Kanchenjunga South Base Camp Trek is a fabulous adventure located in the Far Eastern Himalaya region of Nepal. The mountain straddles the border with Nepal and Sikkim (a small Northeast Indian state). Kanchenjunga, of local Tibetan origin, is spelled as Kanchenjunga, which means "5 jewels," dedicated to its five massive summit tops of Mt. Kanchenjunga.

Itinerary

  • 1Arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, Kathmandu (1,324 M) and Transfer to your Hotel.On arrival at Kathmandu International Airport, you will be well received by Reasonable Treks & Tour staff and then transferred to your hotel within the hub of Kathmandu city, around the most happening and exciting place around Thamel. After checking into your rooms with refreshments, our staff will brief you regarding the Kanchenjunga South Base Camp Hike.

  • 2Kathmandu Sightseeing Tour at Places of Interest and Kanchenjunga South Base Camp Hike Preparation.Kathmandu sightseeing includes UNESCO World Heritage-listed sites. Your Kathmandu sightseeing begins with a visit to Swayambhunath Stupa. Visit the stupa, where you witness the panoramic view of Kathmandu Valley. After that, visit Kathmandu Durbar Square, which is renowned for its aesthetic architecture and rich cultural heritage. Explore phenomenal landmarks such as Kumari Ghar, Hanuman Dhoka Museum, Kaal Bhairav Temple, etc. Kathmandu Durbar Square is a living museum to explore the history and culture of Kathmandu. Have lunch or light snacks and head to Boudhanath Stupa, which is termed the tallest stupa in Nepal. It is a holy pilgrimage site for Buddhists.   • 3Flight from Kathmandu (1324 M) to Bhadrapur (91 M) and Drive to Fikkal (1,500 M) Duration: 5 - 6 Hours.Your early morning flight to Bhadrapur takes around 45 minutes. Depending on the actual departure time, you can have breakfast in your hotel in Kathmandu or you can grab something at the airport or in Bhadrapur on arrival. Your adventure starts with an early morning flight from Kathmandu to Bhadrapur, which takes about 45 minutes. You can have breakfast at your hotel, at the airport, or after you arrive. From Bhadrapur, you will drive through rolling hills and green tea fields to reach Fikkal or Kanyam, famous for its beautiful tea gardens. Once you arrive, you can walk around the tea estates and enjoy the fresh air.

  • 4Drive from Fikkal (1,500 M) to Taplejung (1,800 M) Duration: 5 - 6 Hours.After breakfast in the tea hills, you will continue your scenic drive deeper into the eastern part of Nepal. The first leg takes you to Taplejung, a bustling hill town that is the gateway to Kanchenjunga Conservation Area. The road winds through forests and rural settlements, giving you glimpses of local life and culture. From Taplejung you will drive to Yamphuding, a remote village where your trekking adventure starts. This village is surrounded by beautiful terraced fields and traditional houses. The drive today helps you cover a big distance so you can start your trek fresh tomorrow.

  • 5Trek from Taplejung (1,800 M) to Yamphuding (2,880 M) Duration: 5 - 6 Hours.Your hiking starts from Taplejung at 1,800 m, following a gentle trail that winds through terraced fields and traditional Limbu and Rai villages. You will pass through mixed forests of bamboo, rhododendron, and cardamom plantations, crossing small streams along the way. Villagers can be seen working in their fields, and you’ll get glimpses of their daily rural life and unique culture. The trail is mostly gradual but can be slippery and muddy after rainfall, so good trekking shoes are a must. You’ll cross several suspension bridges over the Tamor and Kabeli rivers and walk through shaded forest sections alive with birdsong. By late afternoon, you will reach Yamphuding at 2,080 m, a large village surrounded by hills and farmland. Here you will spend the night in a local teahouse, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere and warm hospitality of the villagers.

  • 6Trek from Yamphuding (2,880 M) to Tortong (2,995 M) Duration: 8 - 9 Hours.Our trail today, of around eight to nine hours, leads us through cooling forests and along the way offers amazing views of the Himalayas. The trail follows the Amji Khola. Further down the trail, we cross Lassiya Bhanjyang Pass before reaching Tortong, where we will stay the night in a guesthouse.

  • 7Trek from Tortong (2,995 M) to Ramche (4,585 M) and Yalung Glacier. Duration: 5-6 hours.We ascend for a little while before reaching the start of the Yalung Glacier. It is a beautiful walk on a path through the valley. Savor the views of several Himalayan peaks as we pass through the small settlement of Lapsang before reaching Ramche. Ramche is the last teahouse on the Kanchenjunga South Base Camp trek. It is located on the wide ground. If there is a big group of people, we have to spend our night in a tent enjoying the stars and the Himalayas at night.

  • 8Exploration around Ramche (4,585 M) and Kanchenjunga South Base Camp (4,730 M).After walking all the way up to here! Why don’t we have an extra day to explore this untouched and peaceful nature? Yes, we have a full excursion day around Kanchenjunga South Base Camp (4,730 m). We take a packed lunch and set off very early for an up-close encounter with the majestic Kanchenjunga. We follow the valley around its sweeping curve to the vast southern wall of the mountain. Along this ridge exist the three main summits of Kanchenjunga at 8420 meters, 8586 meters, and 8474 meters. These three summits jut out into the clouds, providing an amazing scene. Keep going towards Oktang, descend onto the glacier, and traverse it to a point below Talu, where we get a panoramic view of more pristine mountains. Especially impressive is the eastern part of Khumbakarna Glacier flowing from the east face of Jannu. We then return to our camp at Ramche.

  • 9Trek from Ramche (4,585 M) to Tortong (2,995 M) Duration: 8 - 9 Hours.Walking through the terrain will be easier today, as you will be returning to a lower elevation. The same route that brought you to Cheram on Day 8 will be followed to bring you back to Cheram. Traveling to Cheram will require you to pass through towns like Lapsang and Yalung Bara. Through Cheram, Anda Phedi, and Pasang Danda, you will arrive in Tortong. Let your feet stroll and your eyes take in the beautiful countryside; it's going to be a lengthy but unwinding day.

  • 10Trek from Tortong (2,995 M) to Ranipul (900 M) Duration: 7 - 8 Hours.The last day of your trek to Kanchenjunga South Base Camp is today. You will spend seven to eight hours trekking from Tortong to Ranipul. The trail starts somewhat uphill and down before heading mostly downhill to Ranipul. You will travel to Ranipul for seven hours, stopping for lunch along the way. Upon reaching the tranquil forest on your final day of the Kanchenjunga South Base Camp Trek, it would be a great experience. Close to the Tamar River lies a small settlement called Ranipul.

  • 11Drive from Ranipul (900 M) to Bhadrapur (91 M). Duration: 7 - 8 Hours.We wake up and have a tasty celebratory breakfast in the teahouse. The hiking part of the trek is over—it’s bittersweet. We have a scenic drive through rolling terraced hills and quaint villages until we reach Taplejung, where we stop for lunch. After our quick lunch, we continued our drive to Bhadrapur.

  • 12Flight from Bhadrapur (91 M) to Kathmandu (1,324 M) and Transfer to Your Hotel.The adventure: As your flight time for Kathmandu approaches, take a short drive to Bhadrapur airport and then board the plane for a swift panoramic flight of 45 minutes, then reach back to Kathmandu into the hustle and bustle of city life in Kathmandu.

  • 13Rest Day in Kathmandu City.This day is scheduled as a reserve/rest day in Kathmandu in case of bad weather or internal flight delay/cancellation and having extra days gives flexibility for any changes.
